NFL roster cuts have affected several former Wisconsin Badgers offensive linemen, with some receiving good news as they enter the new season. The University of Wisconsin has developed a reputation for producing reliable offensive line talent for professional teams, often providing important depth beyond just top draft picks like 2007 third-overall selection Joe Thomas.
Jack Nelson, a former left tackle for the Badgers, remains on the Atlanta Falcons roster after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. His former position coach AJ Blazek commented on social media about Nelson’s early success and role increase due to injuries among starting and reserve tackles. According to Blazek: “No surprise B1G @JackNelson755 is playing well as a rookie in Atlanta. He’s as TOUGH & OLD SCHOOL as they come! #WiscOLeads (…)” Nelson is expected to see more action given his experience playing both sides of the line.
Meanwhile, Joe Huber has joined the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent following his college career with both Cincinnati Bearcats and Wisconsin Badgers. Since arriving in Minneapolis, Huber has earned positive reviews for his preseason performance. Blazek also praised Huber’s work ethic in another post: “Congrats to B1G @JoeHuber14! He’s just doing what he’s always done…. Take an OPPORTUNITY, go to WORK, and EARN it!!” (…). As a result of his play during training camp and preseason games, Huber made the team’s final roster.
Nelson began his career with Wisconsin as part of the 2020 recruiting class and started 50 games during three seasons from 2021 through 2024, primarily at left tackle. Huber joined head coach Luke Fickell at Wisconsin in 2023 after transferring from Cincinnati. He started games at multiple positions along the offensive line during two years with each program.
Both Nelson and Huber are now positioned for their first full seasons in professional football.
