A former Tennessee Titans quarterback has been recognized as one of the top 20 quarterbacks of the Super Bowl era. Warren Moon, who played for the Houston Oilers from 1984 to 1993, was ranked No. 15 by a panel at SB Nation. The panel consisted of 13 members and included Doug Farrar from Athlon Sports.

Moon’s career achievements were highlighted by Farrar, who noted that “Moon retired from the NFL after the 2000 season, and he still ranks 13th all-time in passing attempts (6,823), 14th in completions (3,988), 13th in passing yards (49,325), and 16th in passing touchdowns (291).” Farrar added that most quarterbacks ahead of Moon had careers extending into the more pass-heavy era of the 2000s.

Farrar also commented on Moon’s early career challenges due to racial biases in the NFL: “Had he not lost his first six professional seasons to an idiotic NFL that viewed Black quarterbacks as intellectually incapable of handling the rigors of the position, Moon might still be on top of every statistical category.” Instead, Moon played in the Canadian Football League starting in 1978, where he won five Grey Cup championships with the Edmonton Eskimos before joining the NFL.

Moon’s peak performance came during his time with Houston’s run-and-shoot offenses in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Even later in his career with teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks, he maintained high-level play. Farrar noted that “Moon’s age-41 season with Seattle in 1997…was one of the greatest seasons for any quarterback over 40 in pro football history.”

In recognition of his accomplishments, Moon was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
