Colorado football faces a new season in 2025 with head coach Deion Sanders entering his third year. The Buffaloes will play their first season since the departures of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way standout Travis Hunter, who both left for the National Football League draft.

Deion Sanders has not yet named a starting quarterback, with Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and true freshman JuJu Lewis as leading candidates. A decision is expected before Colorado’s season opener against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29 at Folsom Field in Boulder.

The team improved from a 4-8 record in 2023 to 9-4 last year under Sanders. The possibility of a further step forward could put Colorado in contention for a Big 12 title and possible playoff appearance.

USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg and Jim Sergent project that Colorado will finish the upcoming college football season with an overall record of eight wins and four losses (five wins and four losses in conference play). This would be the Buffaloes’ second consecutive winning season under Sanders, though the transition away from Hunter’s impact on both offense and defense may present challenges.

In their analysis of the Big 12 conference, Myerberg and Sergent wrote: “Good luck picking this one. Kansas State is the front-runner by a whisper behind defending conference champion Arizona State, transfer-heavy Texas Tech, TCU, Utah and Iowa State. Look for as many as six or seven teams to make a run at the top spot. The depth in this league is noticeable: Brigham Young, Kansas, Houston and others are very solid, well-coached teams capable of knocking off other Power Four competition in non-conference play.”

Colorado is predicted to tie for seventh place in the Big 12 standings according to USA TODAY’s projections.

The schedule includes notable matchups against No. 23 Brigham Young on Sept. 27, No. 21 Iowa State on Oct. 11, No. 11 Arizona State on Nov. 22 and an away game at No. 20 Kansas State on Nov. 29.

Breaks are scheduled during the weeks ending Oct. 18 and Nov.15.
