For the first time since his debut in 2003 for the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James is on an expiring contract. This development has led to speculation about his potential retirement at the end of the season, especially as he approaches age 41 in December. Despite his age, James continues to perform at a high level, averaging 26.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists over the last five years.

In addition to discussions about retirement, there are rumors regarding James’s next career move following the Los Angeles Lakers’ signing of Luka Doncic. Some suggest that James may seek another team to pursue further goals.

LA Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue commented on the situation during an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe. Lue said, “He’s made it to wherever these guys are able to go to whatever teams they want to go to… He was the one to take that first step. He took all the heat to get to this point where you see everybody’s doing it, you know, and he paved that way (…) If he’s on a one-year contract, that’s where he wants to be,” according to Lue.

During their conversation, Sharpe mentioned hearing rumors about a possible return by James to Cleveland but expressed uncertainty about this scenario: “You went to LA, you have done everything you could do in Cleveland, right? I think you finish it up in LA. I don’t know how much longer they want him in LA, but I think he finished up in LA (…)” Sharpe also stated that he does not believe James will retire after this season.

Sharpe further discussed James’s scoring achievements: “LeBron, who is already the highest scorer of all time with 42,184 NBA points, would want to set a record that nobody will ever catch.” He noted Kevin Durant as the only active player within striking distance but estimated it would take Durant seven or eight more years just to close a roughly 10,000-point gap.

Lue remarked on veteran players’ typical performance decline yet pointed out James’s continued success: big players often average around 10 points per game late in their careers while James remains at approximately 25 points per game; Sharpe agreed with this assessment.

The discussion then turned toward a video showing James working out at the Clippers’ facility. When asked for clarification by Sharpe regarding its significance, Lue replied humorously: “Yeah, I saw that. I don’t know if I can even speak on that. He’s working out at an old facility… I can’t say nothing about that.”

No conclusions were drawn regarding any change in team affiliation or future plans for James during their discussion.
