The Dallas Cowboys are facing another contract negotiation challenge, this time with standout defender Micah Parsons. As discussions continue about a possible extension that could reach $40 million per year, opinions on how to handle his future in Dallas differ among prominent voices.
Skip Bayless, sports commentator and longtime supporter of the Cowboys, shared his perspective on the situation. He questioned whether Parsons deserves a historic deal at this stage of his career. “What my eye test keeps telling me is that Micah Parsons… [has] turned into just another flashy, overhyped Dallas Cowboy superstar,” Bayless said via YouTube. “Who’s about to be dramatically and comically and painfully and ultimately football-tragically overpaid. (…) Jones should… use the system in place against Micah Parsons to put him back in his place… he should just smile and say, ‘we have a contract with Micah and we expect him to honor that contract.’ Yes, sir. Light a new fire under Micah Parsons by just making him play out the final year of his rookie deal, then… use the franchise tag.”
Bayless suggested that team owner Jerry Jones take advantage of the franchise tag option after Parsons’ rookie contract concludes. The franchise tag allows organizations to retain key players for one additional season with a guaranteed salary reflecting the average of the top five salaries at their position.
Currently designated as a defensive end on his fifth-year option, Parsons would receive approximately $22 million if tagged next season according to Spotrac estimates.
Parsons has performed well despite missing four games last season; he finished with 12 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. His consistency is evident: he is the first player in league history with double-digit sacks and Pro Bowl selections in each of his first four years.
Meanwhile, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Troy Aikman weighed in on how vital it is for Dallas to keep Parsons long term and disagreed with Bayless’ view regarding the player’s worth. “I’d be shocked if they don’t [come to terms on a new contract] (…),” Aikman told Monay Night Football. “Prior to the season, but I don’t know what leverage [Parsons] has. Other than the fact that they, in my opinion, won’t be very good without him.”
Aikman also commented positively about new head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s leadership but noted that Jones will decide how Parsons’ case is handled—just as he did during previous negotiations with players such as Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
As both media figures present different recommendations on Parsons’ value to Dallas’ defense, attention remains fixed on whether an agreement will be reached before next season.
