The Minnesota Vikings lost a key player during their season opener against the Chicago Bears when linebacker Blake Cashman left the game with a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter. The 29-year-old had been an important contributor for the team, posting a career-high 112 tackles last season and being recognized as a central figure on defense. This is the second consecutive season Cashman has reached at least 100 tackles and his third straight year with at least one fumble recovery.
Cashman had three tackles and one pressure before exiting Monday’s game. The injury occurred as he attempted to pursue Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who had escaped out of the pocket. Cashman pulled up limping and did not return for the remainder of the game.
No additional information about the extent of Cashman’s injury was provided during the broadcast, leaving his status for Week 2’s game against the Atlanta Falcons uncertain.
Commenting on Cashman’s departure during “Monday Night Football,” Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Troy Aikman said, “When (Blake) Cashman isn’t on the field, this is a different defense.”
In Cashman’s absence, Eric Wilson and Austin Keys are expected to see increased playing time. Wilson previously played for the Green Bay Packers where he recorded 72 tackles, two sacks, two passes defensed, a forced fumble, and an interception in 17 games last season.
An update regarding Cashman’s condition is anticipated sometime Tuesday afternoon.
