Late in Monday night’s football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Commanders, a decision by officials to penalize a hit on quarterback Patrick Mahomes led to public criticism from commentator Troy Aikman and wide receiver Davante Adams.

The play in question occurred when the Chiefs held a 28-7 lead, and officials called roughing the passer after Mahomes was tackled. Troy Aikman, who provided analysis during the ESPN broadcast, commented on air about how referees handle situations involving high-profile quarterbacks. “When it comes to quarterbacks, especially this one, they’re going to protect him,” Aikman said. “And Johnny does a great job, he gets back there. Just a lot of frustration coming out on his part.” Aikman’s remarks came as part of ongoing discussions throughout the season about decisions made by NFL officials regarding player protection.

On ESPN2’s Manningcast, Davante Adams joined Peyton and Eli Manning to share his reaction to the call. While noting that officials eventually decided not to enforce the penalty after discussion, Adams reflected broader concerns among players about consistency in officiating. “We understand we want to protect quarterbacks and I know you guys are advocates of that more than anybody, but at the end of the day we’ve gotta let these guys play a little bit,” Adams said. “We can’t have it where the quarterback gets tossed around for specific teams and now we’re looking at different penalties that we wouldn’t be looking at if it was the Ravens or whoever it would be. I don’t know. I’m just talking.”

The incident has reignited debate around league policies intended to protect quarterbacks while maintaining fairness across teams. Some within professional football believe that star players like Mahomes may sometimes receive favorable decisions during games.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their win with a final score of 28-7 and are set to face the Buffalo Bills in their next matchup as attention continues on NFL officiating practices.
