Tony Sterner has been named the starting kicker for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette football team. Sterner, a redshirt junior, earned the spot after a competitive fall camp where he competed against Logan Klotz and Brek Schultz. He will be taking over placekicking duties from Kenneth Almendares, who was recognized last season as the Lou Groza Award winner.
Logan Klotz will take on kickoff responsibilities for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season. Sterner spoke about his approach to preparing for this opportunity and what he learned during fall camp.
“I think camp was good for the most part,” Sterner said. “We knew Kenny was leaving, and then Coach G was like, ‘We’re not bringing a transfer.’ That’s when I had to step up my day-to-day.”
Sterner mentioned that he focused on changes in diet, recovery routines, and mental training to prepare himself for the demands of being the team’s primary kicker.
With these adjustments in preparation, UL Ragin’ Cajuns look to continue their strong performance on special teams as they enter the new football season.
