Former Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez has been recognized as one of the top NFL players who never won a Super Bowl. CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo ranked Gonzalez eighth on his list of the best players in the Super Bowl era without a championship title.
“Despite starring on several talented Chiefs teams, Gonzalez’s first playoff win did not come until his 16th season,” wrote DeArdo. “A member of the Falcons by that time, Gonzalez’s 10-yard touchdown reception gave Atlanta a 10-point lead over the 49ers in the divisional round of the 2012 playoffs.” However, San Francisco’s Frank Gore scored two touchdowns to secure a 28-24 victory, and Gonzalez retired after the following season.
Gonzalez returned for another season at age 37 but saw limited success with a 4-12 record. Over his career, he achieved six first-team All-Pro selections and participated in 14 Pro Bowls. He amassed 1,325 receptions and 15,127 receiving yards over 17 years but had only one postseason win out of seven games.
With the Falcons, Gonzalez recorded 409 catches for 4,187 receiving yards and scored 35 touchdowns across five seasons. His career primarily spanned with the Kansas City Chiefs before their recent successes with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Notably, Gonzalez was the highest-ranked tight end on DeArdo’s list and was the only tight end featured in the top 30.
Tony Gonzalez was also named to the NFL All-Decade Team for the 2000s and played in a total of 270 games during his Hall of Fame career. He is remembered for catching a crucial pass that led to a winning touchdown against Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game in 2008.
