Tompkins High School football coach Todd McVey will not be coaching on the sidelines when the Falcons open their season against Cy Ranch at Legacy Stadium, as his offensive coordinator has been named acting head coach, according to a statement released Wednesday evening by Katy Independent School District.
At 5:07 p.m. Wednesday, Katy ISD provided Covering Katy News with the following statement: “The District is aware of rumors regarding an arrest or embezzlement of district funds involving this employee. The District has no evidence or record of this. The individual remains employed, while the school’s Offensive Coordinator is temporarily serving as acting coach.”
No further details were made available by the district.
Covering Katy News contacted the district on Tuesday and was told that McVey remained the head coach of the Falcons. However, questions about whether anything unusual was occurring related to McVey went unanswered.
Neither the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office nor the Sheriff’s Office had any records of charges being filed against McVey at the time this report was published.
McVey has led Tompkins High School’s football program since February 2017 and guided it from a winless season during his first year to becoming a consistent playoff contender. In 2017, under McVey’s leadership, the team finished with a record of zero wins and nine losses but rebounded in 2018 to post ten wins and three losses — noted as the biggest turnaround in Texas high school football for that season.
His work earned him recognition as Houston Texans High School Coach of the Year in 2019. That same year he was nominated for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year award, representing Houston Texans at the 2020 Pro Bowl.
“These recognitions are a representation of the great things taking place on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” McVey said at that time.
Tompkins High School opened its doors in 2014.
