South Carolina football is preparing to open its 2025 season against Virginia Tech on Aug. 31. With nine days left before the start, attention has turned to the number nine and its connection with Todd Ellis, a former quarterback who has played a significant role in the program’s history.
Ellis, who wore No. 9 during his playing days, amassed over 9,950 career passing yards at South Carolina, holding a record that once placed him among college football’s top ten in history. His career included consecutive eight-win seasons in the late 1980s and since 2003 he has served as the “Voice of the Gamecocks,” further maintaining his connection with the team.
By the numbers, Ellis threw for a school-record 9,953 career yards and had more than 300 passing yards as a freshman in 1986. He also connected for over 1,000 passing yards to Sterling Sharpe during that season.
As South Carolina prepares for its upcoming season opener, expectations are high among players and fans. The legacy of Ellis may motivate current team members as they aim to build on past successes.
Ellis’s long-standing involvement with South Carolina continues through his broadcasting work, which many say keeps fans closely connected to the program. The coming season provides another opportunity for South Carolina football to honor that legacy while striving for new achievements.
