Steve Young, a former NFL quarterback and San Francisco 49ers icon, is known for his success on the field and his wealth off it. Despite an estimated fortune of $200 million, Young still drives a 2011 Toyota Sienna with 132,000 miles. In an interview with journalist Graham Bensinger, Young explained his attachment to the vehicle: “My dad always told me, ‘You gotta get the most out of it.'”
Young’s career achievements include three Super Bowl wins, two regular-season MVP awards, and seven Pro Bowl selections. His last contract with the 49ers earned him $3.7 million annually, plus bonuses. Before leaving ESPN in 2023, he made $2 million per year as a Monday Night Football analyst.
The Toyota Sienna holds sentimental value for Young’s family as well. His daughter Laila has claimed her seat in the van and is fond of its familiar smell. For the Youngs, keeping the minivan is about principles and nostalgia rather than financial necessity.
Despite its age and a maintenance light issue that Young plans to address soon, he takes pride in maintaining the vehicle. Reflecting on his past vehicles, Young shared that his college car reached over 300,000 miles before he retired it.
In contrast to many athletes who frequently upgrade their cars, Young’s commitment to his old van offers a different perspective on values and legacy.
