Shannon Sharpe’s departure from ESPN’s “First Take” has become permanent following accusations of sexual assault by a former romantic partner. Despite this development, Stephen A. Smith, host and executive producer of “First Take,” stated that he and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee remain on positive terms.
In an interview on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” Smith addressed the situation surrounding Sharpe’s exit. “My relationship with Shannon Sharpe is a pretty damn good one. I got a lot of love for him,” Smith said. “He did a great, great job for First Take. Anything that I needed him to do, he has always been there for me. It’s unfortunate what happened with his situation. And certain decisions that were made were way above my pay grade.”
Sharpe had continued appearing on air shortly after the lawsuit was filed in April, but later announced a leave of absence from ESPN. The network ultimately confirmed his departure in late July.
Reports indicated ESPN had considered further roles for Sharpe at the network, including discussions about hosting a 5 p.m. ET show to replace “Around the Horn.” He also frequently provided commentary during football season on “First Take.” As of now, Sharpe is not attached to any television platform or podcast partnership.
Smith previously released a response video referencing both ESPN management and chair Jimmy Pitaro as part of his public remarks regarding Sharpe’s exit.
