The Pittsburgh Steelers are counting down to their kickoff against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, now 66 days away. In anticipation of the game, attention turns to the history of jersey number 66 and its notable wearers.
The most recent players to don No. 66 for the Steelers include Mason McCormick (2024–present), David DeCastro (2012–2020), Tony Hills (2010), Alan Faneca (2000–2007, who wore No. 65 from 1998–1999), and Jim Sweeney (1996–1999).
Alan Faneca is widely regarded as the best player in Steelers history to wear No. 66. Drafted by Pittsburgh with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft, Faneca was a key figure on the offensive line for ten years, starting in 153 games from 1998 to 2007. His contributions were vital in both passing and running plays, significantly aiding in the team’s Super Bowl XL victory.
Faneca’s accolades include six First-team All-Pro selections, two Second-team All-Pro honors, and nine consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 2001 to 2009. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2000s and has been inducted into several halls of fame including the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
