Choosing wide receivers for the top spots in fantasy football leagues has become a topic of analysis ahead of the 2025 season. Trends from recent seasons show clear patterns that fantasy players can use when considering which wideouts to select at the top of their drafts.

According to data tracked over the past decade, no wide receiver older than 31 has finished among the top three at the position. Larry Fitzgerald was an exception in 2017, placing inside the top five after turning 32. Another notable trend is that neither rookies nor second-year receivers have made it into the top three since Randy Moss and Josh Gordon accomplished those feats in 1998 and 2013, respectively.

Several statistical benchmarks were used to narrow down this year’s leading candidates. Players who averaged less than 1.3 yards per snap or fewer than 0.13 targets per snap in their previous season were excluded, except for rare outliers such as A.J. Brown.

Based on these criteria and current average draft positions (ADP), six receivers stand out as likely candidates for a top-three finish: Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Puka Nacua, Nico Collins, and Tee Higgins.

Ja’Marr Chase had a strong performance last year: “Last year’s WR1 averaged 28.2% more fantasy points per game than the next-closest receiver,” showing his dominance compared to other players at his position across four seasons.

Justin Jefferson’s consistency is also highlighted: “The LSU product has been a model of consistency since he entered the league. Here are his point-per-game ranks for his five seasons: WR8, WR4, WR1, WR5, WR2.”

CeeDee Lamb remains among possible favorites despite some fluctuations: “Lamb had an off year in 2024 and still finished as the WR8 (…)” according to historical data reviewed by Elisha Twerski for USA Today.

Other names that met all statistical thresholds include Puka Nacua—whose production may be tied closely to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s health—and Nico Collins who finished strong before being derailed by injury but remains efficient on a per-snap basis.

Sophomore wideouts rarely reach these heights; however Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., and Ladd McConkey from last year’s rookie class are noted as potential exceptions if they break with past trends.

Fantasy managers looking for sleeper picks outside typical early rounds might consider Chris Godwin, Jauan Jennings, Khalil Shakir or Marvin Mims Jr., all identified as meeting important efficiency criteria while holding later ADP slots.

The analysis encourages using these trends as tiebreakers within draft tiers or when comparing players with similar projections—a practice underscored throughout Twerski’s piece: “You can also use this article as a reminder that efficiency and the ability to earn targets are key indicators for future wide receiver success.”

For many fantasy football participants preparing lineups before draft day arrives, attention to these proven benchmarks could make all the difference in assembling competitive rosters.
