With less than two weeks before the Colorado Buffaloes open their season against Georgia Tech on Aug. 29, head coach Deion Sanders is still deciding who will be the team’s starting quarterback. Julian Lewis appears to be favored by players as a potential pick.
Following the departure of Shedeur Sanders to the NFL, Colorado is focusing on Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis as leading contenders for the quarterback position.
Coach Sanders has not announced a definitive starter and may split playing time between both quarterbacks. Wide receivers from the team have publicly supported both candidates. Sincere Brown said, “Kaidon is very wise, very experienced (…) He can facilitate very well. Julian has a pure god given arm. From a talent stand point, they both got it.”
Hykeem Williams, another recent addition to the roster, spoke about Lewis’ impact at camp saying, “I know for sure JuJu. He’s that.”
The Buffaloes lost key receivers Travis Hunter, LaJohntay Wester, Will Sheppard and Jimmy Horn Jr., all of whom joined the NFL along with Shedeur Sanders. The coaching staff now faces the task of building immediate competitiveness while developing long-term program stability.
Kaidon Salter brings experience while Julian Lewis provides notable natural ability. Praise from teammates continues as preparations for the NCAA season progress.
In related news, wide receiver Sincere Brown compared himself to Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Randy Moss: “Standing at 6-foot-5,” Brown noted his ability to secure contested catches mirrors that of Moss, who is recognized as a four-time First-team All-Pro and led receiving touchdowns five times.
Brown’s physical presence exceeds that of Moss, and his previous year at Campbell yielded 1,028 yards and 12 touchdowns. These achievements could make him an important target for whoever becomes starting quarterback.
Brown decided to join Colorado after observing last season’s performance under Coach Sanders and seeing former University of South Florida receivers Xavier Weaver and Jimmy Horn Jr., who moved on to play in the NFL—Weaver with Arizona Cardinals and Horn Jr. with Carolina Panthers.
Their progression under Sanders’ coaching influenced Brown’s decision, along with opportunities offered by an NFL-experienced staff.
