Shilo Sanders, competing for a roster spot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was removed from Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills after throwing a punch at Zach Davidson in the second quarter.
Sanders, who went undrafted out of Colorado where he played for his father, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Deion Sanders, had earlier been penalized for pass interference during the game.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles addressed the incident following the game. “You can’t throw punches in this league. It’s inexcusable. They’re gonna get you every time,” Bowles said. “You gotta grow from that.”
Known as a hard-hitting and playmaking safety during his college career at Colorado, Sanders made an impression during his preseason debut with Tampa Bay. However, he faces significant competition to secure a place on the team’s regular season roster. The altercation and resulting ejection may impact his standing as roster decisions approach.
The play that led to Sanders’ removal involved both players pushing and shoving for several yards before Sanders threw a punch, which resulted in an immediate penalty and ejection.
This weekend was difficult for both sons of Deion Sanders; Shedeur Sanders, recently selected in the fifth round by Cleveland, completed three of six passes for 14 yards and was sacked five times during his own preseason appearance.
