The death of Jeff Sperbeck, a longtime sports agent and business partner of football Hall of Famer John Elway, is being treated as a tragic accident by authorities. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said that no evidence of foul play has been found in the incident, which occurred when Sperbeck fell from a golf cart driven by Elway at the Madison Club in California.
“This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco told The Denver Post. He noted that the involvement of high-profile individuals like Elway has drawn more attention to the case than usual. Following the accident last Saturday, Elway’s party immediately called 911.
Bianco mentioned that his department became involved after media inquiries confirmed Elway was driving the cart. Responders found no signs of intoxication or mechanical issues with the vehicle. “It is common practice for medical personnel…to call us after the scene of an accident because something doesn’t look right,” Bianco explained, adding that this was not one of those cases.
The investigation is expected to be “relatively short” as authorities review surveillance footage and witness statements. “We’re doing everything we can to make sure that this is what it appears to be, and just an accident,” Bianco said.
Witness Ali Simon described the scene as “scary” and noted how distraught Sperbeck’s wife was during the incident. Sperbeck had represented over 100 NFL players in his career and co-founded wine brand 7Cellars with Elway.
Elway expressed his grief in a statement: “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.” He extended condolences to Sperbeck’s family and acknowledged his late friend’s impact on many lives.
Elway is renowned for his achievements as an NFL quarterback, including leading numerous comebacks and scoring 300 touchdowns during his career.
