Will LeBron James remain with the Los Angeles Lakers? The question has been discussed among NBA analysts following comments from his agent, Rich Paul, who said, “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.” This statement signaled that James could consider leaving if the Lakers do not build a roster capable of competing for another championship. While there are reports suggesting that the Lakers are “quietly plotting the most aggressive roster change,” James has not publicly confirmed he will stay with the team.
Recently, Shannon Sharpe addressed the topic during an interview with LA Clippers head coach Ty Lue on Sharpe’s ‘Club Shay Shay’ show. Sharpe referenced one of James’ recent workout videos filmed at a Clippers facility. When asked about it by Sharpe, Lue responded jokingly, “I don’t even know if I can speak on that. … I can’t say nothing about that.”
Sharpe also brought up speculation about a possible return by James to Cleveland. In response, Lue replied, “I don’t know.”
Sharpe offered his perspective, stating: “You went to L.A., you’ve done everything you can do in Cleveland. I think you finish it up in L.A. I don’t know how much longer, how much longer they want him in L.A., but I think the thing is he finishes up in L.A. (…) I don’t think he’s done after this year. I don’t think he’s done. And the thing is, T-Lo, I was talking to somebody the other day. I said, ‘if you play 24, you might as well go and get that 25’. But I think he wants to set that record out there.” According to Sharpe: “No, I don’t see it happening. He loves everything about LA. Savannah loves everything about LA. I think he really loves the Lakers. I really think he loves living in LA. (…) You got water, you got beaches. I mean everything. His businesses are in L.A. There’s really nothing for him not to like about L.A.”
Sharpe has long been a vocal supporter of James and considers him a friend; reporter Jaron Spor previously noted this relationship.
The discussion comes amid speculation regarding Luka Dončić possibly becoming the new face of the Lakers following James’ eventual retirement and ongoing talks of team rebuilding efforts around Dončić.
Charles Barkley expressed his own view during an interview on BetMGM Network’s ‘The Bettor Angle,’ saying: “LeBron is going to have to move on at some point. I mean, it is what it is. You know, he’s been there, even though he’s been putting up good numbers; they haven’t been successful in probably four years.” Barkley added: “It’s already probably Luka’s team now. You don’t sign, trade for Luka Doncic, give him all that money, and it’s not his team.”
Dončić commented recently on playing alongside James: “I mean, he’s one of the best basketball players ever. So just for having him there, it’s gonna help all of us, not just me but every player, all the staff; it’s gonna help us win ’cause he knows what to do to win.”
At present James has shown no signs suggesting an imminent departure from Los Angeles or from professional basketball altogether.
Until James makes a public statement on his future plans or intentions regarding a championship pursuit with Los Angeles or elsewhere—uncertainty over his next steps remains.
