In a recent episode of Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, the two former National Football League players discussed Deion Sanders’ disciplinary approach as head coach at Colorado. Sanders has implemented strict rules for his players, stating, “For the players who violate the rule, consequences range from up, down, stadium runs, etc.”
Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Shannon Sharpe compared Sanders’ strategy to past coaching styles. According to Sharpe, “That’s old school coaching. I don’t even know if that would fly now, man. I think the players would lose their damn minds if a coach said, ‘No, we’re not going to eat on the plane home.’ That’s old school coaching. That’s the way they did it in the probably 70s, 80s, and 90s.” He elaborated further on Sanders’ intent: “The last thing that you want to do is have your players hurt one another. Hey, absolutely. Absolutely… So if it takes running the stadium stairs and doing whatever else you need to do to get that out of your system… so be it.” Sharpe also commented on potential challenges posed by new college football dynamics: “I don’t know if this style of punishment worked because I think some guys are already looking. You coach a kid hard, he’ll jump in the transfer portal.”
Chad Johnson noted that Sanders’ reputation could influence player attitudes toward discipline and commitment. Johnson stated: “Even if players can jump in the portal, people want to go play for Deion Sanders. This is Deion Sanders. So you understand what that comes with. You understand the discipline that he expects out of you to be at your best.”
The discussion reflects broader conversations within college football about changing norms and expectations in player management and team culture.
