The San Francisco 49ers are actively exploring ways to bolster their roster ahead of the 2025 National Football League season, particularly at the wide receiver position following significant departures and injuries. The team missed the playoffs in 2024 after a series of injuries derailed their campaign, but enters this season with an improved health outlook.

Notably, Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders during the offseason. Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained last year. In response to these challenges, the team added veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling to its roster.

General Manager John Lynch addressed ongoing discussions about signing free agent wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, who started his career with the franchise and was recently released by the New England Patriots. “No new news,” Lynch said. “Anytime a really good football player who we had ties to — Kendrick started his career here — becomes available, there’s obviously going to be discussions. We’re trying to evaluate the pertinent information. Kendrick has been hurt in training camp, so trying to see where he’s exactly at. Having conversations. We’ll let that play out, we’ll continue to look into it.”

Bourne played 12 games for New England last season, recording 28 receptions for 305 yards and one touchdown while managing injuries throughout his tenure with the team.

Lynch did not confirm whether an agreement is imminent but made clear that team officials are evaluating Bourne’s situation closely.

Further updates regarding Bourne’s potential future with San Francisco or another franchise are expected soon as teams finalize their rosters before kickoff.
