The San Francisco 49ers have acquired running back Brian Robinson, Jr. from the Washington Commanders to address concerns in their backfield before the start of the season. Robinson, 26, had a 799-yard and eight-touchdown campaign last year. The trade was made in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
The move follows a series of roster adjustments as the 49ers sought to bolster their running back depth after losing Jordan Mason earlier in March as part of cost-saving measures. Other recent attempts to strengthen the position were hindered by injuries: rookie Jordan James is out with a broken finger requiring surgery and Corey Kiner was placed on injured reserve due to a high ankle sprain.
Second-year player Isaac Guerendo remains an option but carries some concern following multiple fumbles upon returning to practice this week and a history of injuries. Preserving starting running back Christian McCaffrey’s health remains a central priority for the team moving forward.
Robinson has scored 20 touchdowns over his three seasons in the league and is expected to contribute immediately, likely pairing with McCaffrey as a physical presence near the goal line. The front office also recently added receiver and returner Skyy Moore as further depth.
A KNBR commentator said, “It’s just to me a talent bump… I think the 49ers are telling us today that they understand this roster still needs a little bit of a polish up.” JD John Dickinson believes Robinson completely solidifies the 49ers’ RB room (…)” (JD John Dickinson).
The team’s roster moves have been described as an example of careful management by John Lynch and his staff, converting prior trades into functional players ahead of Week One against Seattle.
