Roger Staubach: A legacy as one of NFL’s top quarterbacks

Roger Staubach, a prominent figure in the history of the Dallas Cowboys, is often celebrated as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. His career, spanning from 1969 to 1979, began at age 27 after serving in the Vietnam War. During his time with the Cowboys, Staubach led the team to two Super Bowl victories in 1971 and 1977.

Staubach’s tenure with the Cowboys was marked by consistent excellence. He was selected for the Pro Bowl six times and was named to the All-NFC team five times. His leadership on the field helped Dallas secure four Super Bowl appearances, with wins in Super Bowls VI and XII. Notably, he became the first player to win both a Heisman Trophy and a Super Bowl MVP when he earned MVP honors in Super Bowl VI.

Throughout his career, Staubach completed 1,685 passes out of 2,958 attempts for a total of 22,700 yards and threw 153 touchdown passes. Additionally, he rushed for 2,264 yards and scored 20 rushing touchdowns. His performance earned him an induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Staubach as their 129th overall pick during the tenth round of the 1964 NFL Draft. Beyond his football achievements, Staubach’s legacy includes being part of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1970s and receiving accolades such as induction into the Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1983 and being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018.
