Multiple bullets were fired at the Kansas City Chiefs practice facility in May 2024, with one round entering head coach Andy Reid’s office while he was present. Authorities said Thursday that the case is still open and under investigation, but no injuries were reported.
According to The Kansas City Star, which cited multiple sources, Reid was working alone when a bullet fired from outside pierced the window of his office and became lodged in a wall between his bathroom and entry door. The team responded by installing bulletproof glass in the facility afterward.
Two other bullets hit the building—one struck the third floor and another hit an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Kansas City police stated that few within the organization knew about the incident, which is being investigated as aggravated assault because people were inside at the time.
The police said, “Based on investigation to this point there is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” adding that no arrests or charges have been made.
Chiefs president Mark Donovan addressed the issue at a kickoff luncheon Thursday. Donovan said, “Then we went back and said, ‘OK, here’s where we are. Here’s the situation. He’s what we’ve determined happened. What’s the next step, both from a PR standpoint, from a communication standpoint?’ (…) We made our decisions and moved on.” He also commented on organizational safety: “I think in any situation, we have to be fully prepared, no matter where we go (…) We will be fully prepared, no matter where we go.”
Donovan also stated that keeping staff members and fans safe remains a priority for the team.
The incident occurred several months after Reid led Kansas City to its second consecutive Super Bowl championship and third title in five seasons. Last season, they again captured an AFC title but lost to Philadelphia in February’s Super Bowl.
Reid has compiled a record of 273-146-1 over twelve seasons with Kansas City and fourteen with Philadelphia. He has led Kansas City to seven straight AFC title games and ranks fourth on the NFL career wins list behind Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Don Shula, George Halas and Bill Belichick.
