The San Francisco 49ers are continuing their efforts to strengthen their wide receiver group ahead of the start of the National Football League season, as multiple injuries and a suspension have thinned their options at the position.
According to a report by Diana Russini of The Athletic, the 49ers are making calls to other teams about available wide receivers following a failed attempt earlier in August. San Francisco pursued John Metchie III but was outbid by the Philadelphia Eagles, who acquired Metchie from the Houston Texans in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a fifth-round draft pick.
The situation has become more urgent with several players sidelined. Brandon Aiyuk is expected to be unavailable until at least Week 6. Jauan Jennings continues to manage a calf injury, while Jordan Watkins will miss time due to a high-ankle sprain. Demarcus Robinson is also facing a suspension.
This leaves the team with Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing likely serving as its primary receivers in Week 1. Pearsall has had notable performances during training camp, and Cowing brings potential as a big-play threat, but questions remain about depth behind them. Players such as Robbie Chosen, Terique Owens and Russell Gage—despite positive camp showings—are viewed as less reliable alternatives.
With these concerns on offense, there is speculation that General Manager John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan may look for another impactful move before Week 1. Both have previously shown willingness to make aggressive trades.
There were no direct quotations from Lynch or Shanahan included in reports regarding the team’s ongoing search for additional wide receiver talent.
