Sam Mills Jr. was born on June 3, 1959, in Neptune City, New Jersey. He grew up nearby in Long Branch. From a young age, Mills played football and wrestled at Long Branch High School. He was known for his toughness and work ethic. After high school, Mills attended Montclair State College. He walked on to the football team and quickly became a key player. He set records for tackles during his college career. Mills was named Defensive Player of the Year in his conference three times.
Mills went undrafted but did not give up. He played three seasons in the United States Football League for the Philadelphia and Baltimore Stars. He helped the team win two championships. After the USFL folded, Mills joined the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. He played 12 seasons as a linebacker for the Saints and later the Carolina Panthers. Mills earned five Pro Bowl selections and was respected for his leadership. After retiring, he coached the Panthers. Despite a cancer diagnosis in 2003, he continued coaching until his death in 2005. Mills’ career and life are connected to Neptune City as the place he was born and where his journey began.
Sam Mills played in 181 games and was selected for 5 Pro Bowls over his 12-season Hall of Fame career as a linebacker.
Mills is famously remembered for his “Dome Patrol” era with the New Orleans Saints, where he was part of one of the most celebrated linebacking corps in NFL history.
