Joe Namath was born on May 31, 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He was raised in the Lower End neighborhood. His parents were of Hungarian descent. His father worked in the steel industry. Namath attended Beaver Falls High School. He played football, basketball, and baseball. He was the starting quarterback. His football team went 9–0 in 1960 and won the WPIAL championship.
Namath received offers from several colleges. He chose the University of Alabama. He played under Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. In 1964, he led Alabama to a national championship. He was then drafted by both the NFL and AFL. He signed with the New York Jets in 1965.
Namath played 13 seasons in professional football. He was known for his strong arm and leadership. He became the first quarterback to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season. In 1969, he led the Jets to a Super Bowl III win. He guaranteed the win before the game. He was named Super Bowl MVP.
Namath was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He also worked in television and film after retiring. He remained a public figure for decades.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Joe Namath with the 12th overall pick in the 1st round of the 1965 NFL Draft; additionally, the New York Jets chose him as the 2nd overall pick in the 1st round of the 1965 AFL Draft.
