Herbert Adderley was born on June 8, 1939, in Philadelphia. He grew up in a working-class household. He attended Northeast High School. He played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. He earned All-City honors in each sport. He graduated in 1957.
Adderley went to Michigan State University. He played as a halfback and safety. He led the team in rushing and receiving. He was named All-Big Ten and team co-captain. He also helped establish a fraternity chapter on campus.
In 1961, the Green Bay Packers drafted him. He started on offense but was moved to cornerback. He became a top defensive player. He made five All-NFL teams. He helped Green Bay win five championships and the first two Super Bowls.
He was traded to Dallas in 1970. He helped them win Super Bowl VI. He retired in 1973 after twelve seasons. He had 48 career interceptions and seven returned for touchdowns.
Adderley was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. He is one of four players to win six NFL titles. He often said he saw himself as a Packer, not a Cowboy.
Adderley remained connected to Philadelphia. He is a member of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. His success began in the city’s public schools. He returned for events and honors throughout his life. He died on October 30, 2020.
