Doug Atkins was born on May 8, 1930, in Humboldt, Tennessee. He attended Humboldt High School, where he played basketball on the state-champion team in 1949. He went on to the University of Tennessee on a basketball scholarship. However, football coach Robert Neyland saw his potential on the field and recruited him to play football. Atkins became a star defensive end for the Tennessee Volunteers. He played on the national championship-winning team in 1951 and earned All-America honors in 1952.

In 1953, Atkins was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He played with the Browns for two years, winning the NFL Championship in 1954. He then joined the Chicago Bears, where he became a key defensive player, earning multiple All-Pro selections. Atkins later played for the New Orleans Saints before retiring in 1969.

Atkins is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His achievements in football and his connection to Humboldt remain a point of pride for the community.

The Cleveland Browns selected Doug Atkins with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 1953 NFL Draft.

Atkins is renowned for his role in helping the Chicago Bears defeat the New York Giants in the 1963 NFL Championship.
