Doug Atkins, born on May 8, 1930, in Humboldt, Tennessee, attended Humboldt High School where he played basketball on the 1949 state championship team. He initially received a basketball scholarship to the University of Tennessee, but football coach Robert Neyland recognized his athletic potential and recruited him to join the football team. Atkins excelled as a defensive end for the Tennessee Volunteers, contributing to their 1951 national championship and earning All-America honors in 1952.
In 1953, Atkins was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, playing two seasons with the team and winning the NFL Championship in 1954. He later became a key defensive player for the Chicago Bears, earning several All-Pro selections. Atkins concluded his professional career with the New Orleans Saints, retiring in 1969.
He has been inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the latter honoring him in 1982. Atkins is especially remembered for his significant role in the Chicago Bears’ victory over the New York Giants in the 1963 NFL Championship. His football legacy remains a source of pride for the Humboldt community.
