Dick Stanfel was born in San Francisco on July 20, 1927. He attended San Francisco City College. He later transferred to the University of San Francisco. He played offensive guard and gained attention for his blocking.
In 1951, the Detroit Lions selected him in the NFL Draft. Stanfel played five seasons with the Lions. The team won two NFL championships during that time. Stanfel finished his playing career with Washington. He was known for consistency and strong line play.
After retiring, Dick Stanfel became a coach. He worked as an assistant for several NFL teams. These included the 49ers, Saints, and Bears. He spent many years on NFL sidelines. His coaching career lasted into the 1990s.
Stanfel was named to the NFL’s 1950s All-Decade Team. Many viewed him as one of the best guards of his time. In 2016, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
