Remembering Curley Culp’s birthday on March 10, Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle

Curley Culp was born on March 10, 1946, and raised in Yuma, Arizona, as the youngest of 13 siblings, including a twin sister named Shirley. He attended Yuma Union High School, where he excelled in football and wrestling, securing two state wrestling championships. Culp earned a scholarship to Arizona State University, where he continued to compete in both sports. In 1967, he won the NCAA heavyweight wrestling title and was recognized as an All-American in football and wrestling.

Culp was selected by the Denver Broncos in the 1968 draft but was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played for seven seasons. He contributed to the Chiefs’ victory in Super Bowl IV. Later, he joined the Houston Oilers and became a key figure in their 3-4 defensive scheme, earning six Pro Bowl selections and being named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1975.

He concluded his professional football career with the Detroit Lions, completing 14 seasons in the NFL. In 2013, Culp was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Throughout his life, Culp received significant recognition in Arizona, including being named the state’s greatest athlete in 2006. He is celebrated in Yuma as one of the city’s most accomplished athletes.

Curley Culp, a six-time Pro Bowler, was honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013, marking his distinguished 14-season career as a defensive tackle.
