Champ Bailey was born June 22, 1978. He grew up in Folkston, Georgia. At Charlton County High School, he played football, basketball, and ran track. He broke many school records. In football, he played on offense, defense, and special teams. His athletic talent was clear early.
Bailey attended the University of Georgia. He played football for three seasons. He also competed in track and field. He earned All-American honors. He won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in 1998.
In 1999, he became the first player from Folkston ever drafted to the NFL. He was picked seventh overall by the Washington Redskins. In 2004, he was traded to the Denver Broncos. He played there for 10 seasons. He went to the Pro Bowl 12 times, the most for a cornerback in NFL history.
Bailey was known for his speed, tackling, and pass coverage. He holds the NFL record for most passes defended. He retired in 2014 after a short stint with the New Orleans Saints.
In 2019, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He was one of the top defensive players of his era.
