Bruce Smith was born on June 18, 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia. He grew up in the city and attended Booker T. Washington High School. He was a standout athlete in several sports. Football became his focus.
Smith went on to play for Virginia Tech. He dominated in college football, earning All-American honors twice. In 1985, he was the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.
He played 19 seasons in the NFL. Most of them were with the Buffalo Bills. He became the league’s all-time leader in sacks, with 200. Smith played in four straight Super Bowls. He was named to 11 Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro teams.
He later played for the Washington Redskins. In 2003, he broke Reggie White’s sack record. He retired with 200 sacks. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Smith never forgot his roots in Norfolk. He returned to Virginia after retiring. He invested in hotel development in the region. He became a successful businessman and community figure. He also remains active with his church in Norfolk.
