Bill George was born on October 27, 1929, in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Waynesburg Central High School. He played college football at Wake Forest University, becoming their first All-American. In 1951, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears. He began his professional career in 1952 as a middle guard. In 1954, he shifted to a new role, creating the middle linebacker position in the 4–3 defense. He played 14 seasons with the Bears and one with the Los Angeles Rams. His career included eight Pro Bowl selections and a 1963 NFL Championship. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974. His number 61 jersey was retired by the Bears. He passed away on September 30, 1982.
