Barry Sanders was born in Wichita, Kansas, on July 16, 1968. He grew up there with his family. He went to Wichita North High School. He became a standout athlete, especially in football. After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University.
In 1988, he had one of the best seasons in college football history. He rushed for 2,628 yards and scored 37 touchdowns. He won the Heisman Trophy that year. He left college early for the NFL.
In 1989, the Detroit Lions drafted him third overall. He played for the team for ten seasons. He rushed for over 15,000 yards and scored 99 touchdowns. He went to the Pro Bowl every year he played. In 1997, he was named NFL MVP. He surprised many by retiring before the 1999 season.
