He attended Fordham University from 1935 to 1937. There, he anchored the “Seven Blocks of Granite” line. He was a two‑time All‑American center. In 1938, the Detroit Lions drafted him sixth overall. He played center and linebacker for the Lions until 1946. He earned All‑Pro honors in 1939 and 1944. Mid‑1946, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles. He helped the Eagles win back‑to‑back NFL championships in 1948 and 1949. He retired after the 1950 season with 134 games played. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968. He co‑founded the NFL Alumni Association and served as its first president.
