There are many talented quarterbacks in the NFL, but only one can win the Super Bowl each year. Current stars like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow have experienced this reality, often facing obstacles from Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has claimed victory in three of the last six Super Bowls as of the 2025 season. However, Mahomes is not the first to prevent others from winning; some quarterbacks have managed to defeat him and his team in the playoffs. Jalen Hurts recently led the Philadelphia Eagles to a significant win over Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX.
As several top quarterbacks today aim for their first championship ring, it is worth examining those who never won a Super Bowl throughout NFL history. This list excludes active players.
Dan Fouts stands out as a quarterback ahead of his time statistically. He transformed the Chargers into playoff contenders during his peak years but reached the AFC Championship Game only twice. In 1980, he lost to the Raiders and then fell to the Cincinnati Bengals in what is known as the “Freezer Bowl” during the 1981 season. Despite these setbacks, Fouts was a leading passer from the late 1970s through the early 1980s and became the first player to throw for over 4,000 yards in consecutive seasons. In 1982, he was named Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for nearly 3,000 yards (2,883) in just nine games. His career concluded with six Pro Bowl selections and an induction into the Hall of Fame.
