In 1980, four notable figures in American football were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. This year marks the 45th anniversary of their induction. The players honored are cornerback Herb Adderley, defensive end David “Deacon” Jones, defensive tackle Bob Lilly, and center Jim Otto.
David “Deacon” Jones, known for his speed and agility, was a 14th-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 1961. His talent was discovered unexpectedly when Rams scouts saw him on film while evaluating an opponent. Despite being underestimated initially, Jones quickly demonstrated his prowess on the field. He earned unanimous All-League honors for six consecutive years from 1965 to 1971 and participated in eight Pro Bowls. In both 1967 and 1968, he was recognized as the top defensive player in the NFL by a major news outlet. Over his 14-season career, Jones played in 191 games and missed only five.
Jones is also credited with coining the term ‘sack’ to describe his method of tackling quarterbacks.
