The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 1970 is marking its 55th anniversary this summer. Enshrined on August 8, 1970, the class included safety and kick return specialist Jack Christiansen, wide receiver Tom Fears, halfback Hugh McElhenny, and two-way end Pete Pihos. This milestone celebrates their contributions to professional football.
Hugh McElhenny was a standout player known for his speed and agility. He was drafted in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers as a halfback. During his rookie year, he recorded notable achievements including an 89-yard run, a 94-yard punt return, and a rushing average of 7.0 yards per carry. His performance earned him the title of Rookie of the Year unanimously. By the end of his career, McElhenny had accumulated over 11,000 all-purpose yards.
McElhenny was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 1952 NFL Draft. Over his career, he amassed 11,375 combined net yards and scored 60 touchdowns. He was also selected for six Pro Bowls.
