FILE – Star running backs of Southern Methodist University, Eric Dickerson and Craig James, were recognized for their time as a standout tandem in the SMU backfield over 40 years ago. Their achievements as part of the “Pony Express” set them apart during that era of college football.
In recent comments, observers noted that if Dickerson and James had played in today’s college football environment, some aspects would have differed. The running backs would have been able to receive money legally under name, image and likeness (NIL) rules, unlike the restrictions during their playing days. Also, with the current transfer portal system allowing for more player movement between schools, it is likely they might not have remained teammates throughout all four seasons.
This reflection highlights how the landscape of college football has shifted since Dickerson and James starred together at SMU. The recognition comes as an acknowledgment of their lasting impact on the sport during an era much different from today.
