Drew Allar, a senior quarterback for Penn State, has been named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list as he heads into his final college football season. The award, which recognizes strong leadership, character, and academic achievement among quarterbacks, has been part of college football for nearly 40 years.
Allar is entering a season with high expectations from both media and fans. He has previously earned various honors and now adds this recognition to his preseason achievements. His inclusion on the watch list highlights his reputation not only for athletic ability but also for leadership qualities and academic standing.
In addition to being listed as a candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Allar is on several other award watch lists this season. These include the Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. Last year, he was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and received honorable mention recognition in the All-Big Ten selections during each of his two seasons as a starter at Penn State.
Allar currently holds Penn State’s record for career completion percentage by a quarterback. Despite not appearing on any preseason All-American lists yet this year, he will seek further postseason honors based on his upcoming performance.
Ultimately, any awards that Allar receives will depend on how well he performs both on and off the field throughout the coming season. As noted in reporting from Nittany Lions Wire: “Ultimately, any awards Allar wins will come down to his pedigree and overall play. He is already the most efficient Penn State quarterback, ranking first in completion percentage all time. However, his performance both on and off the field will have to be particularly stellar to contend for the Golden Arm. Allar can’t just be extraordinary. He must be exemplary. With this team by his side, he certainly will have the chance to be.”
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award continues its tradition of honoring outstanding college quarterbacks who show excellence in multiple aspects of their lives.
