Jerry Jones’ role in the new Netflix documentary “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys” has drawn criticism from sports writer and Dallas Cowboys biographer Jeff Pearlman. Pearlman, who authored the 2008 bestseller “Boys Will Be Boys,” which explores the Dallas Cowboys’ 1990s dynasty, questioned the accuracy of the series and its depiction of Jones’ involvement in key team events.

In a video posted to his TikTok account, Pearlman commented: “Jerry Jones taking credit for the Herschel Walker trade is ridiculous. It’s not a ‘we.’ It was Jimmy (Johnson). (…) It was zero percent, Jerry. Jerry didn’t even know what the hell was going on. It was a Jimmy Johnson trade. The organization of the trade was Jimmy. The value for the picks for the players they acquired was Jimmy.” He also criticized what he saw as a lack of impartiality in the series, saying: “This whole documentary is just a handj*b to Jerry Jones. It actually is infuriating.”

The docuseries premiered on Netflix on Aug. 19, 2025, with eight episodes produced by Skydance Sports and NFL Films. “America’s Team” follows Jerry Jones’ acquisition of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and their successes through the following decade. Interviews include former head coach Jimmy Johnson, Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders, former President George W. Bush, and Nike co-founder Phil Knight.

Pearlman’s statements raise broader concerns about how sports documentaries portray influential figures and maintain factual accuracy.

While “America’s Team” provides viewers an inside look at one of football’s most prominent franchises, it has sparked debate about objectivity in storytelling related to high-profile subjects such as Jones and historical events involving Hall of Famers like Smith.

Viewers are encouraged to watch with a critical perspective to better understand both sides presented within coverage of the Dallas Cowboys’ history.
