The Dallas Cowboys’ recent decision to trade Micah Parsons to Green Bay follows a pattern seen before in the National Football League, where notable players have been moved during the peak of their careers. Parsons, who had established himself as a strong pass rusher over four seasons, was traded after contract negotiations failed. The Cowboys received two first-round draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark in exchange.

A comparable situation occurred in 2018 when the Oakland Raiders traded Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears. Like Parsons, Mack was dealt after unsuccessful contract talks and for multiple high-value picks. Mack performed well for Chicago, earning All-Pro honors, but was later traded again without helping the team win a playoff game.

Another major trade involving Dallas happened in 1989. Owner Jerry Jones sent Herschel Walker to Minnesota, gaining eight draft picks that contributed to building a team which won three Super Bowls. Those acquired players included Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Emmitt Smith and others like Darren Woodson and Russell Maryland. Conversely, Minnesota did not experience playoff success with Walker.

Jones was also behind another key move in 1992 when Charles Haley joined Dallas from San Francisco. Haley’s addition was crucial for Dallas’ Super Bowl wins during that decade.

Several other prominent trades are part of NFL history:

– Randy Moss left Minnesota for Oakland in 2005 but neither team gained much from the deal. However, Moss later found success in New England.
– Fran Tarkenton returned to Minnesota after playing for New York, leading the Vikings to three Super Bowl appearances and being named NFL MVP in 1975.
– Eric Dickerson was sent from Los Angeles Rams to Indianapolis Colts in 1987 and played an important role in ending the Colts’ playoff drought.
– Marshall Faulk helped St. Louis secure a Super Bowl win following his trade from Indianapolis; he also received several league awards.
– Christian McCaffrey revitalized San Francisco’s offense after arriving from Carolina and earned recognition as Offensive Player of the Year.
– Fred Dean’s trade from San Diego led to significant contributions during San Francisco’s run of championships.
– Darrelle Revis spent one season with Tampa Bay after a move from New York before signing with New England as a free agent and winning a Super Bowl there.
– Champ Bailey went to Denver from Washington, outlasting Clinton Portis (who went the other way) and eventually joining the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Among these transactions is Paul Warfield’s move from Cleveland to Miami under Don Shula’s guidance. Warfield made significant contributions by making five consecutive Pro Bowls and helping Miami achieve back-to-back Super Bowl victories including an undefeated season in 1972.

Other significant deals include Mike Haynes joining the Raiders while holding out with New England; his arrival boosted the defense and helped lead Los Angeles to a championship.

These cases highlight how trades involving elite talent can change team fortunes—sometimes benefitting both parties but often leading only one side toward long-term success.
