In nine seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, wide receiver Adam Thielen recorded 534 receptions for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns. Only Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinees Cris Carter and Randy Moss have more catches in franchise history. Thielen’s receiving yards rank fifth in team records, and his touchdowns are third all-time among Vikings.
Thielen joined the Carolina Panthers after being released by Minnesota in 2023. In his first season with the club, he caught 103 passes for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns. In the following season under coach Dave Canales, Thielen missed seven games but played a key role in quarterback Bryce Young’s improvement during the second half of 2024. He finished that year with 48 receptions—second on the team—but led Carolina with 615 receiving yards and five touchdown catches.
Now, Thielen is returning to Minnesota as part of a deal seen by some as favorable for both organizations.
Albert Breer commented on social media: “This is a pretty heavy price for the Vikings to pay. But they initiated the talks, and had to get the Panthers on board.”
Carolina Panthers General Manager Dan Morgan has moved to reshape the wide receiver group by drafting Tetairoa McMillan (first round, Arizona) and Jimmy Horn Jr. (sixth round, Colorado) this April. In 2024, Carolina used its first-round pick on Xavier Legette and added undrafted player Jalen Coker to their roster. The current wide receiver room also includes David Moore, Brycen Tremayne, and Dalevon Campbell.
Morgan was able to improve Carolina’s draft position for both 2026 and 2027 by moving up in each year’s rounds as part of this trade.
It remains to be seen how these changes will affect Carolina’s roster in future seasons.
