Steve Young was born October 11, 1961, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family later moved to Connecticut. He graduated from Greenwich High School. He played quarterback and became one of the top high school players in the state. He enrolled at Brigham Young University. He started as quarterback and set several NCAA records.
In 1984, he joined the USFL’s Los Angeles Express. He moved to the NFL in 1985 and played briefly for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 1987. He became starting quarterback in 1991. He led the team to victory in Super Bowl XXIX. He was named MVP of the game. He won two league MVP awards. He retired from the NFL in 1999.
In 2005, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He later worked as a football analyst on television. He also became active in business and charitable work.
Salt Lake City was his birthplace. He lived there as a young child. His family and cultural ties to the city remained strong. Though most of his life was spent elsewhere, Salt Lake City was his starting point.
