Two former Notre Dame players have been recognized by CBS Sports as among the Top 25 best NFL players in history. The list includes quarterback Joe Montana and defensive back Alan Page.
Alan Page, who played in the NFL from 1967 to 1981, was a key figure in the Minnesota Vikings’ “Purple People Eaters” defense. He became the first defensive player to be named league MVP and was selected for the Pro Bowl every year from 1968 to 1976. Page recorded 148.5 sacks during his career. While with the Vikings, he contributed to three NFC championships and the 1969 NFL championship before finishing his career with the Chicago Bears. At Notre Dame, he helped secure the 1966 national championship and earned All-American honors.
Joe Montana, listed fifth by CBS Sports, played in the NFL from 1979 to 1994. He led Notre Dame as quarterback in his final two years before achieving success in the NFL, winning three Super Bowl MVP awards and guiding the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories. Montana also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and is remembered at Notre Dame for leading a comeback win over Houston in what is known as the “Chicken Soup” game in 1978.
