Nicolas Cage is reportedly in discussions to join the fifth season of the HBO anthology crime series “True Detective.” If finalized, this would be Cage’s second major television role. His first leading TV part, in Prime Video’s “Spider-Man Noir” series, is currently in production.
According to reports, the new season of “True Detective” will set its story in New York City for the first time. Previous seasons took place in locations such as Louisiana, California, the Ozarks, and Alaska. Cage is expected to play Henry Logan, a New York City detective assigned to a case based in Jamaica Bay on Long Island. Past seasons have featured actors including Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster.
The most recent season of “True Detective,” which aired in early 2024 and was set in Alaska, received strong ratings. The upcoming fifth season will again be overseen by Issa López. She directed and co-wrote last year’s fourth season.
Cage has had a busy schedule recently. He received attention for his performance as a serial killer in last year’s “Longlegs.” This year he appeared in the psychological thriller “The Surfer,” set in Australia, and starred in the Western film “Gunslingers” with Stephen Dorff. Next year he will appear alongside FKA twigs and Noah Jupe in the French horror film “The Carpenter’s Son.” Other projects include David Mamet’s “The Prince” with J.K. Simmons and Giancarlo Esposito; David O. Russell’s sports biopic “Madden,” where Cage will portray Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee John Madden; and a starring role as Spider-Man Noir—a character he previously voiced—in a live-action version for television.
Filming for the fifth season of “True Detective” is expected to begin later this year with release targeted for 2027.
