The Taos High School football team recently hosted a two-day football camp featuring NFL Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. The event, known as CampLT, aimed to inspire and develop the skills of young athletes in Taos and the surrounding area.
Reggie Suazo, a senior player for the Taos Tigers, participated despite recovering from an off-season leg injury. Suazo expressed his commitment to improving his leadership and teamwork skills. “We have to be a better team, push each other, and be there for one another,” he said.
CampLT’s expansion to Taos was facilitated by Johnny Olguin, Taos High School’s athletic director, and Derrick Scott, the camp’s director. Scott has a long history in football coaching, including time as an assistant strength coach at the University of Texas during their 2005 national championship win.
The camp included drills led by Scott and former Longhorns players Josh Turner and Kwame Cavil. Turner is an all-American safety from Oklahoma, while Cavil played in both the NFL and CFL. Local coaches also volunteered to assist with training.
Assistant coach Andy Miera Jr. appreciated the opportunity to see familiar faces return for off-season training. “I just love seeing the happiness in these kids,” Miera Jr. said.
LaDainian Tomlinson joined the camp after arriving from Santa Fe Airport. Known for his remarkable career with nearly 14,000 rushing yards and 145 touchdowns, Tomlinson encouraged participants to work hard and believe in themselves. “I hope they see the knowledge of these great coaches that are out there coaching them,” he said.
Tomlinson’s career highlights include setting an NFL record with 28 rushing touchdowns in a single season in 2006.
