With the 2025 NFL season approaching, attention on the Dallas Cowboys is growing. This interest is not only due to current issues such as Micah Parsons’ contract discussions, but also because of renewed focus on the team’s pivotal moments in history. Netflix has released a new docuseries titled “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” which explores Jerry Jones‘ acquisition of the franchise and the decisions that led to its rise in the 1990s.

One central moment revisited in this series is the Herschel Walker trade with the Minnesota Vikings. At the time, it was a controversial move met with significant criticism. Despite initial doubts, the decision became fundamental to building what would be one of Dallas’ most successful teams. With draft picks acquired from this trade, the Cowboys selected Emmitt Smith, who went on to become the National Football League’s all-time leading rusher.

The documentary examines how sending Walker to Minnesota in 1989 for multiple draft picks was initially labeled as reckless by commentators. Over time, however, many have come to view it as one of the greatest trades in league history. These selections allowed Dallas to secure three Super Bowl victories in less than five years.

While recounting these events, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys” details not just public and internal skepticism at that time but also highlights how these choices shaped both a successful team and a highly visible sports franchise in America.

Although it has been nearly three decades since their last title in 1995, many fans feel both nostalgia and frustration when reflecting on past successes. Under Jerry Jones’ ongoing leadership, current management faces new challenges that include tough contract negotiations and high expectations from supporters hoping for another championship run.

The docuseries offers historical context about leadership and bold choices within an NFL franchise—an implicit message focusing on vision and determination rather than providing explicit solutions for today’s team issues.
